Disentangling the effect of Brain Insulin Resistance on Brain Health: The BIR-BrainHealth Project

Individuals with diabetes face an elevated risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to unravel the explanations and comprehend the underlying mechanisms involved. Existing research highlights that insulin sensitivity, vital not only in muscle and liver but also brain, is diminished in diabetes, leading to brain insulin resistance (BIR). This study posits that BIR plays a pivotal role in the cognitive decline observed in diabetes. We aim to elucidate how BIR disrupts essential brain functions crucial for cognitive health. Employing cutting-edge methods encompassing bioinformatics and physiological bioimaging, we seek to untangle the relationship between BIR development, cognitive loss, and the specific brain functions affected. Through a deeper understanding of these interconnections, we aspire to enhance preventive measures and contribute to the development of novel treatments targeting BIR and cognitive decline in diabetes patients._x000D_
