SABiOS: guiding Sustainable Agriculture and Biodiversity management with earth Observing Satellites
Biodiversity is declining and ecosystems degrading, impacting agriculture. To address this, we need to monitor ecosystem restoration, biodiversity recovery, and sustainability of agricultural production following international goals and targets. However, monitoring these aspects across scales is difficult, ground data is often sparse, and the role of new remote sensing technology is not well known yet. This research project connects disciplines of natural and technical sciences, with the aim to deepen our understanding of spatial scale in remote sensing, to develop new algorithms, and to apply new spectral and structural sensor technology for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. The proposed research builds fundamental knowledge to monitor the sustainability of agricultural practices, its impact on biodiversity, and the resilience of agricultural and natural systems to climate change impacts using novel sensors on drones, airplanes, and Earth observation satellites.
