Photoactive Manganese Complexes for Sustainable Solar Energy Solutions (PhotoMan)

Solar energy is an attractive renewable energy source as the amount of solar energy reaching Earth’s surface every hour is enough to supply humanity’s energy demand for a whole year. To secure overall sustainable technologies to combat climate changes, it is crucial that the light-activated materials themselves are based on abundant elements. Manganese is the 3rd most abundant transition metal in Earth’s crust and has low toxicity, but little is known about how to create a suitable ligand environment around manganese to enable light-harvesting properties. Using sophisticated ligand design strategies, this project strives to develop photoactive manganese compounds. Through detailed mechanistic insights on light-activated processes, our experimental work aims at understanding structure-photoactivity relationships. Our goal is to tailor the photophysical properties of novel manganese-based materials for light-harvesting applications, such as in photocatalysis and as dyes in solar cells._x000D_
